Roguelike games are a very specific subgenre of RPG video games, designed by the hardcore fans for the hardcore fans. This type of games is characterized by a dungeon crawl through randomly generated levels, tile-based graphics, turn-based gameplay, and (most importantly) by the permanent death of the main character. Most roguelike video games are based on a high fantasy narrative, as they are heavily influenced by classic RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons. The 1980 game Rogue is widely considered as the forerunner, the namesake of the genre, and the best of all time.
